Autodesk Licensing Options: Single-User (Stand-alone) vs. Multi-User (Network)

Change is constant.  A popular statement that likely resonates with anyone familiar with Autodesk’s ever-evolving licensing models. And while change is constant, this blog post is meant to define and detail current Autodesk licensing options as well as the choices available to licensing models that are discontinued by Autodesk’s transition to a Named User model.

Autodesk products are either being utilized through Autodesk perpetual software with either standalone or network licensing or Autodesk subscription software with either single-user or multi-user licensing. While you may be familiar with these access types, below are the descriptions and details of each:

Autodesk perpetual software is purchased up-front, in a large lump sum, and allows the use of the software (subject to terms of Autodesk licensing agreement) indefinitely.

What is a perpetual license with standalone access?

An Autodesk perpetual license with standalone access allows each license to be installed on a single workstation for a specific allowable version.

For perpetual licenses that are currently on an active maintenance plan, each license also allows for multiple versions and additional installation(s) for home or mobile use and access to cloud services, subject to terms of the Autodesk licensing agreement.

An internet connection is required for the initial download and installation of software. An internet connection is always required to access cloud services.

NOTE: This licensing model is discontinued. See further below for trade-in to Named User details.

What is a perpetual license with network access?

An Autodesk perpetual license with multi-user access allows a number of users on the same TCP/IP network to share access to product licenses.

The Network License Manager (NLM), installed on one or more servers, controls the distribution of licenses to users. Multiple users (up to the number of network perpetual purchased) access Autodesk products for a specific allowable version. Administrators can install a product on an unlimited number of devices, but the total number of users accessing the product at one time is limited to the total number of network perpetual purchased.

Autodesk subscription software is purchased at a lower entry point and allows the use of the software (subject to terms of the Autodesk licensing agreement) for a specified amount of time.

What is a subscription with single-user access, also known as Named User?

An Autodesk subscription with single-user access allows one or more named users to access Autodesk products.  Each user is assigned a license that they access using their unique login credentials.

For example, how many users can use AutoCAD?

A named user can download and install the software assigned to them on up to three devices but can use only one instance of the software at a time.  So access can easily be obtained at the primary office, home office, and on a mobile device such as a laptop.

An internet connection is required to authorize the initial use, download, and installation of the software and then, at a minimum, within a 30-day timeframe for Autodesk to validate the subscription is active. An internet connection is always required to access cloud services.

What is a subscription with multi-user access?

An Autodesk subscription with multi-user access allows a number of users on the same TCP/IP network to share access to product licenses.

The Network License Manager (NLM), installed on one or more servers, controls the distribution of licenses to users. Multiple users (up to the number of multi-user subscriptions purchased) access Autodesk products for the current and eligible previous versions. Administrators can install a product on an unlimited number of devices, but the total number of users accessing the product at one time is limited to the total number of subscriptions purchased.

An internet connection is required for the initial download and installation of software. An internet connection is always required to access cloud services.

NOTE: This licensing model is discontinued. See further below for trade-in to Named User details.

Here’s a recap and update on Autodesk Trade-in to Named User for multi-user licensing and discontinued licensing models

Autodesk discontinued new purchases of all perpetual software (standalone and network) in May of 2017.

Autodesk discontinued the renewal of existing maintenance plans with a phased-out approach that will culminate on May 7, 2021.

Autodesk discontinued new purchases of all non-Enterprise multi-user subscription software beginning August 7, 2020.

Autodesk discontinued the renewal of existing non-Enterprise multi-user subscriptions with a phased-out approach that will culminate on August 7, 2023.

These discontinued licensing models qualify for Autodesk’s trade-in offer to transition to single-user, now referred to as Named User.

Autodesk Transition to Named User is a trade-in path for multi-user subscription; as well as network perpetual on a maintenance plan, and stand-alone perpetual on a maintenance plan to Autodesk Named User (single-user) subscription.

Autodesk Named User Plans

Today Autodesk products are offered almost exclusively through subscription with single-user access. These single-user subscriptions are offered through point products such as Autodesk AutoCAD, Autodesk Revit, Autodesk Civil 3D, and Autodesk 3DS Max, to name a few, as well as add-on products such as Autodesk BIM 360 Design, and through a collection of point products known as Autodesk industry collections.

All Autodesk subscriptions with single-user access by default are on a Standard plan. With no minimum subscription requirement, the Standard plan is tailored towards individuals and smaller teams. Autodesk’s additional plans include Premium- for medium and large teams of 50 or more, Enterprise- for extra-large teams, and Education – for eligible students and educators.

Autodesk is responding to feedback from customers who have a need for an option suited for occasional users and intends to offer a cloud-based license solution in the not-too-distant future.

Autodesk’s continued focus and development in their Named Plans will provide greater flexibility, improve administrator management, produce data-driven insights, allow for license cost optimization, increase product functionality, integrate collaboration tools, and offer a more relevant user experience.

We at Microsol Resources as an Autodesk Platinum Partner and Value Added Reseller will continue to update you on Autodesk changes that deliver these objectives.

How to Transfer Ownership of Autodesk Licenses or Subscriptions (TOLS)

The transfer of Autodesk products or subscriptions involves the transfer from one individual or company to another individual or company, or from one country to another country.

In the case of a merger, acquisition, or divestiture, you can transfer your network and stand-alone licenses on a maintenance plan from one individual or company to another individual or company. You can’t transfer perpetual licenses that aren’t on a maintenance plan or subscription licenses. You can apply for an Autodesk Transfer of License or Subscription (TOLS) if either:

  • A transfer of a perpetual license or subscription from one person or company to another person or company, or
  • A transfer of a perpetual license or subscription from one country to another country for use in that other country.

Review the guidelines below to confirm if your circumstances qualify for a transfer and then follow the steps in this blog if you want to transfer an Autodesk product or subscription.

Guidelines on How to Transfer an Autodesk Product or Subscription

The Autodesk License and Services Agreement governing the use of Autodesk software generally prohibits transferring ownership without the prior written consent of Autodesk.

However, in a very limited number of circumstances, Autodesk will allow the transfer of products or subscriptions between parties or locations. These circumstances include, for example:

  • The merger of two or more companies
  • The divestiture or acquisition of a company by another company
  • Transfers between subsidiaries of a single company
  • Dissolution of a partnership
  • Privatization of a government entity
  • Transfer from a private entity to US Government Organization
  • Donations to a non-profit organization
  • Transfer to another country – In most cases the licenses and subscriptions must be registered for at least 12 months to transfer to another country.

What do you need to request an Autodesk Transfer of License?

Be sure to have the following information ready to include in the Transfer of License and Subscription Application:

  • All active, registered serial numbers for transfer, including the number of seats for transfer and product names
  • Transferor and Transferee company names and addresses
  • Transferee’s Contract Manager (primary contact) name and email address
  • Transferee’s Reseller name, country, and email address
  • Transferor and Transferee signatory names, titles, and email addresses.

It is important to enter correct email addresses for both the Transferor and Transferee, as Autodesk will communicate solely through email if there are any issues. And, if approved, Autodesk will email both Transferor and Transferee for their electronic signatures to complete the TOLS process.

Here are three easy steps to request the transfer of Autodesk license
  1. Gather your license or subscription information and complete the Transfer of License and Subscription application.
  2. If you would like our assistance please complete the Transfer of License and Subscription application and then email the completed TOLS application to either your Account Executive or sales@microsolresources.com. Once submitted, you will receive an email with your case number. Autodesk will review your application and contact you within 2 business days if additional information is needed.
  3. If approved, the Transferor and Transferee will receive an email request with instructions for electronic signatures. Signatures must be returned within 7 days or the application will be withdrawn.

Once the Transfer of License and Subscription application is approved, the Transferor/original owner of the software license(s) should provide the Transferee/recipient of the license with all pertinent physical media if applicable.  Autodesk is under no obligation to provide additional or replacement media to either the Transferor or the Transferee for the software being assigned.

If you are still having trouble with your transfer of Autodesk license request, please contact your Account Executive at Microsol Resources or email info@microsolresources.com so we can assist you.

Transferring Ownership of Autodesk Licenses (TOL)

NOTE: To view our more updated blog post on Transferring Autodesk Licenses, please visit this page: https://microsolresources.com/how-to-transfer-autodesk-licenses/

Before we get started on how to transfer ownership of Autodesk Licenses, let’s define what circumstances dictate requesting a Transfer of License (TOL). Transfer of License (TOL) may be allowed if either circumstances apply:

(a) a transfer of a perpetual license from one person or company to another person or company (limited circumstances; see form for details)

(b) a transfer of license by the licensee from one country to another country for use in that other country.

The Autodesk License and Services Agreement governing use of Autodesk software generally prohibits Transferring Ownership of Autodesk Licenses without the prior written consent of Autodesk.

Please note: If you own a standalone license and just want to move this from one computer to another, you can do so by using the License Transfer Utility.

Moving on, in order to make a TOL request, you will want to follow the steps below:

  1. Complete the Transfer of License Application. Please don’t forget to complete Step 4, Enter the Transferee Reseller information, on your TOL application. This way Microsol Resources will be kept in the loop as to the progress and results of your request. You can locate your Contract and Serial Number details within Autodesk Account under the Contract & Orders tab.*
  2. Transferor (coming from) and Transferee (going to) must print and sign the Application.
  3. Scan your signed Application and save it to your computer in a PDF format.
  4. Complete Autodesk’s online Customer Assistance web form which you can locate by clicking the link within step 4 of the TOL form (see link in step 1 above).
  5. In the “How May We Assist You?” Field, enter “License Transfer Application” and submit your application.

After you submit your application:

  • You will receive an email with your case number.
  • Autodesk will review your TOL application and contact you if they require additional information.
  • Autodesk will notify you to confirm about the status of your TOL Application, and/or whether they have approved your TOL request.

If you are still having trouble with your TOL request, please contact us at info@microsolresources.com or call 888-768-7568.
